Dr. M. Kamran Azim (PhD UoK, Pakistan)

Prof. M. Kamran Azim has more than 25 years of experience in research, teaching, training, and administrative service experience in an academic setting. Currently, he is serving as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Karachi. He has demonstrated the ability to run and manage research laboratories, including project design, collaborations, experimentation, submission and publication in manuscript form (as senior author), submission of research grants to federal and private agencies (as principal investigator), recruiting and supervising personnel and trainees.
Prof. Azim teaches courses on Genomics, Bioinformatics, Protein Chemistry, Enzymology and Molecular Biology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised 10 Ph.D. and 10 M.Phil. students. Currently, Prof. Azim has 70 research publications with >130 cumulative impact factor. His field of research interest is Genomics and Molecular Biology. Prof. Azim’s group is currently involved in several research projects related to human genomics, human disease genomics, and metagenomics. He led the genome mapping project of the first Pakistani individual ( Prof. Azim’s group utilizes experimental methods (Next Generation Sequencing, Spectroscopy) as well as knowledge-based computational techniques (Bioinformatics and Molecular modeling) to answer questions regarding structure-function relationships in genes and proteins. Recently, Prof. Azim’s group has characterized the oral bacteriome dysbiosis in type 2 diabetic patients (medRxiv 2020.04.09.20052613). The latest research carried out in his laboratory provided novel insight into salivary microbiome dysbiosis in addicts of betel nut preparations (medRxiv 2020.04.13.20064063). Moreover, Prof. Azim’s group carried out metagenomic profiling of (a) freshwater lakes at different altitudes in Pakistan and (b) bacterial communities in the drinking water supply system of Karachi, Pakistan. In 2018, Prof. Azim was appointed as Executive Editor of Pakistan Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the official journal of Pakistan Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
